公園の樹 ／ Garden Tree

　女の絶叫が聞こえた。 そちらの方をよく見ると、女は立っていて、ベンチに座った男が叫ぶ女を静かに見ているのが、私から少し離れた場所に見えている。 
　男女間の喧嘩のようだったが、しゃべっている内容までは分からない。 「大変だな」と何となく思った。 女の絶叫ぶりが半端ではなく、近隣住民のみんなに聞かせてやる、というくらいの大声、わめき声だったのだ。 
　しばらくすると男は静かにベンチを立って、俺を見つけて歩いてくると「タバコを一本くれないか」と穏やかに言った。 ■

　　I heard a woman screaming.  When I look over there, the woman is standing, quietly looking at the screaming woman of the man sitting on the bench, 
a little far from me.
　　It seemed like a quarrel between men and women, but I don't understand what they are talking about.  Somehow I thought, "Terrible." 
　　The woman's screaming was not odd, it was a howling and screaming that would let everyone in the neighborhood hear it.
　　After a while, when the man quietly stood on the bench, found me and walked, he gently said, "Can you give me a cigarette?"  ■
